Windshield would help a lot. Check out J.C. Whitney. Yeah, I know their stuff isn't the greatest but it saves a lot of bucks. For $50 you can get a windshield that works and have enough for gas to go somewhere.
Part of your problem with the wind is riding 2 up. The Savage is pretty top heavy with two riders. As you get more experience you will find yourself shifting your weight to compensate for the wind without even thinking about it. Don't give up on the 'lil Suzi, it's better for long trips than you think.
